Once you come out of the stratosphere of the multinational companies (Dell, Nokia, Samsung, IBM, etc.), there is a surprising amount of confusion and lack of knowledge on the details of the RoHS legislation among small and mid-size companies. RoHS is the Restriction on the use of certain Hazardous Substances in Electrical and Electronic Equipment. It was passed by the European Union (EU) in 2003 and as of July 1, 2006 was in force in all European Union countries. Since then, several other countries have adopted RoHS-type legislation, including China, Korea, and Japan.

What materials are restricted by RoHS?
There are six materials that are effectively banned from electrical and electronic equipment by RoHS:

  • Cadmium,
  • Mercury,
  • Lead,
  • Hexavalent Chromium,
  • PBB,
  • and PBDE

How can I determine if my company’s products are covered by RoHS?
