Vibration Testing Critical to COTS Success
ADDED: 2/12/2003 2:28:00 PM

With the signing of the 2003 Defense budget and the Homeland Security Act, increasing attention is being drawn to COTS (Commercial, Off-the-Shelf) products repackaged for military use. The 1991 Department. of Defense Strategic Acquisition Initiative mandated that U.S. defense contractors must look first at COTS products when developing new technology and upgrades.

MET Laboratories answers this critical need with complete, comprehensive vibration and shock testing. We can perform vibration testing to 50,000 force lbs., as well as Sine, Random, Sine on Random, Random on Random, Gunfire, Shock, and Vibration @ Temperature. MET’s shock testing capabilities include Half-Sine and Terminal Sawtooth testing to 30,000 g’s. Thermal shock testing can be performed at a temperature rate of change up to 100° C/min. MET also tests to EMC and vibration components of MIL-T-28800E.

Contrary to popular misconception, testing and evaluation of COTS components are still needed. COTS components must be thoroughly tested to performance specifications as part of the integrated system incorporating it. MET Laboratories has over 25 years of Mil-Spec testing experience, and the capacity to test to any mission profile. For more information, e-mail info@metlabs.com.
