MET Successfully Hosts PlugFest, DASH7 Alliance's First Interoperability Testing Event
April 6- 8, 2010 - MET Laboratories has successfully completed the hosting of PlugFest, a first round of conformance and interoperability tests for ISO 18000-7 (DASH7) devices. The event resulted in the verification of more than 20 devices from three vendors, and marks an important first step towards a complete DASH7 Certification Program.
PlugFest was organized by the DASH7 Alliance, a coalition of organizations promoting a standard for wireless sensor networks. DASH7 technologies provide low-cost, low-power options that transmit data wirelessly for multiple applications. MET Labs is the exclusive certification administrator of the DASH7 Alliance.
DASH7 technology providers Evigia Systems, Identec Solutions, and Savi Technology participated in the two-day event. Participants used real-world test cases developed by the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) and the DASH7 Alliance Testing and Certification workgroup.
DASH7 is a wireless sensor networking technology that evolved from radio-frequency identification and sensing technologies used in the defense industry. Because of its multi-kilometer range, ten-year battery life and its ability to penetrate water, concrete and other materials that can block other Radio Frequency (RF) signals, DASH7 devices provide competitive advantages over other wireless technologies.
"By establishing a new set of engineering relationships and allowing open communication channels between companies in the name of interoperability, DASH7 members have added a new dimension to the alliance", said Ted Osinski, Director of RFID Programs at MET Labs. "This is an important first step in establishing a world-class DASH7 Certification program, which we expect to announce this summer."

MET has entered an exclusive, three year agreement with the DASH7 Alliance to test products for DASH7 certification. DASH7 is the first successful attempt to organize active RFID technologies into a strong, global standard.
Highlights of DASH7 include:
- 1 Operation at 433 MHz, globally available, unlicensed spectrum
- Based on ISO 18000-7 standard
- Multi-year battery life
- Range of up to 2 km (potentially farther)
- Penetration of concrete walls, water, and ability to "bend" around metal objects
- Low latency protocol that enables reliable tracking of moving objects
- Small, lightweight protocol stack that minimizes silicon costs
- Data transfer at up to 27.77kpbs (potentially as high as 250kpbs)
- Sensor & security support
"The testing services that MET will provide for DASH7 developers are natural extensions of MET's experience in providing compliance testing for passive RFID, Bluetooth and other wireless technologies," said Rob Frier, president of MET Laboratories. "We have an exciting opportunity to work with developers on innovative applications for DASH7 technology, making sure that their applications work with each other."
This marks the 2nd significant partnership MET has enter with a major RFID alliance. MET has a long standing testing and certification partnership with EPC global.
