ATEX Agreement
ADDED: 2/12/2003 2:18:00 PM

MET now “one stop shop” for Hazardous Location testing
MET Laboratories has signed an agreement with TRL Compliance Services Ltd., to provide testing, certification and product inspection services under the ATEX Directive that becomes mandatory in July 2003. With the TRL ATEX and BSI ISO 9000 agreements in place (see related article), MET is now a “one-stop shop” for Hazardous Location certifications.
Despite popular belief, the same agency that provides ATEX certification does not have to provide the ISO 9001 registration required by several annexes of the Directive. The Directive clearly states that the initial assessment, certification and quality management certification may be done by separate agencies – for example, MET, TRL, and BSI.
MET is one of only a few NRTLs and CBs accredited to certify products intended for use in potentially explosive atmospheres in both the US and Canada. MET can conduct an investigation in accordance with the applicable EN standards simultaneously with a US and Canadian certification project.
The ATEX Directive covers electrical and mechanical equipment, which may be used in potentially explosive atmospheres. Products certified under the ATEX Directive are eligible to bear the Epsilon-x (Ex) mark.
